The von Holstein (the House of Schaumburg) family came into contact with Charlemagne through the marriage of Adolf II, Graf von Holstein to Mechtilde von Schwarzburg-Käfernburg herself a descendant of Charlemagne thru Louis the Pious.
Adolf II was a son of Adolf I, who was the first Graf von Schauenburg from 1106 and the second Graf von Holstein from 1111 and the progenitor of House of Schaumburg.
