Miss Universe 2017 is...

Miss South Africa - Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

She bested other contestants from 91 countries and it's the second crown for South Africa after Margaret Gardiner's won in 1978. I am actually rooting for her to win after the Final Q&A portion. She was crowned by 2016 MU Iris Mittinaere of France, again with the Mikimoto Crown.

Philippines rep Miss Rachel Peters managed to reached 2nd cut of the competition but failed to make it to the top 5.

For the complete set of finalists & other contestants read here.

Late Post : she was crowned last Sunday (Nov 26, 2017) in Las Vegas, Nevada USA

Philippines Performance in the Big 4 Pageants

Eto uriratin muna natin ang kasalukuyang kalagayan ng Pilipinas sa larangan ng pagandahan kuno. Base lang ito sa Big 4 na pinauso ng Misso at nalathala naman sa Wikipedia.

Philippines Performance in the Big 4 Pageants
Pageant	Editions	Participated	Placements	Percentage of Placement	Wins	Percentage of Winning
ME (Earth)	17	17	14	82.35%	4	23.53%
MI (International)	57	56	31	55.36%	6	10.71%
MU (Universe)	66	62	22	35.48%	3	4.84%
MW (World)	67	50	14	28.00%	1	2.00%

TOTAL (ALL)	207	185	81	43.78%	14	7.57%

in ME, Philippines had placed 14 times out of 17 editions and managed to snatched 4 crowns with winning percentage of 23.53, the highest in the big 4.

we did not placed only in years 2007, 2010 & 2016
ME is owned by a Philippine based organization.

in MI, Cristina Alberto attended the 1977 edition but withdrew the pageant.

in MU, from 1958 to 1961 Philippines missed the pageant; it's either no representative were chosen or the candidate withdrew.

in MW, we only started sending delegates in 1966 and in 1976 & 1977 the candidates withdrew from the pageant.

Miss Universe 1974 (Manila, Philippines) - Observations

So, I just finished watching the 1974 Miss Universe (23rd edition) pageant held in my country, The Philippines. It is the first edition held in Asia & the 3rd edition held outside of Continental United States.

Listed below are my observations based on the youtube video that I found.

There are a total of 65 entrants in this edition, the highest number of entrants since 1952 same with the year 1968.
Most of the spectators are wearing the traditional barong for gentlemen and terno for the ladies.
The newly built Folk Arts Theater may not have AC back then because they are fanning like there's no tomorrow. Funny tho.
Mexico has the longest intro.
"Magandang umaga sa inyong lahat, ang inyong lingkod si Guada Sanchez taga Maynila".
"Forever and ever I will remember this day in Philippines" - Dominican Republic
Finland is Miss Photogenic.
Miss Guam is pretty.
Suriname has a very weird intro.
"Kaligayahan sa inyong lahat" (Happiness to all) - Miss USA
We still have Yugoslavia as a country.
Sabi ni Bob Barker.."Bayinahan Dance Company".
Kumanta sila ng Pamulinawen in Terno costume.
Pangkat Kawayan performed after the Evening gown competition.
Carlos P. Romulo is a judge during the finals, he is the current Minister of Foreign Affairs at the time of the pageant.
Some of the prizes for the MU winner were, 10,000 USD, seiko watches, Thomas cook vouchers & Toyota Sedan.
Telecasts by CBS.

Top 5 Q&A :
1. Finland answer is very good
2. Wales answer is good too
3. Colombia's anwer is very sincere and direct
4. Aruba's answer is just ok
5. Spain's anwer is not the best but his confidence is oozing and she is the prettiest.
